8. Your Signature Move
One thing. Small. But unforgettable.
That one moment that makes people say: “Hey, remember that DJ who…?”
You can play an amazing set, have good energy, even get booked — but without a recognizable element, you’ll fade into the crowd. A signature move isn’t a gimmick — it’s your stamp, your scent, your DNA on the dancefloor.
Types of signature moves:
- Sound: A unique way you start or end sets. A track that always appears.
- Catchphrase: “Are you ready?”, “Welcome to the journey”, “Let’s get weird.” When you say it — the crowd is in.
- Accessory: Hat, glasses, pendant, gloves, mask, vinyl bag, fan.
- Movement: A ritual as you approach the decks — a snap, a bow, a handshake with the mixer.
- Stage prop: Candle, spotlight, laser glove, pre-set meditation, champagne toast, waving a flag.
- Giveaway: Stickers, QR codes, postcards with your handle. People love to take a piece of the night home.
- Speech — or silence: Some speak on the mic. Some never do. Both can become iconic.
But keep in mind:
- It shouldn’t be cringe.
- It shouldn’t get in the way of music.
- It shouldn’t feel like forced creativity.
It should be natural. Like a tattoo you’d get even if nobody saw it.
Examples:
- Boris Brejcha — the mask, minimal movement, live-house aesthetic
- Peggy Gou — iconic style, colors, smile, Gou-mania
- Claptone — always the hat and gloves
- Honey Dijon — unmistakable fashion and political message
A good signature gives you:
- Recognition
- Social media content
- A story people retell
- Effortless memorability
Mini Checklist:
- [ ] I have a visual, sonic, or behavioral element that repeats
- [ ] It feels authentic — not forced
- [ ] It supports the music, not distracts
- [ ] People notice it and talk about it
- [ ] I’m ready to keep using it
